The Hind Group can trace its origins back to almost a century.
In 1918, Birajlal Jhunjhnuwala, the patriarch of the family established a business in Rangoon (now known as Yangon in Myanmar) that created textiles and garments which were exported to different markets.
At the tender age of 14, Shyam Sundar Jhunjhnuwala joined his father in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and quickly picked up the family trade. It was not long after when Japan invaded the region, leaving it in complete ruins. Nonetheless, the father-son duo pushed to rebuild, opening the first textile mill in Rangoon. By the end of the 1940's, the Jhunjhnuwalas controlled 85% of the textile trade in Myanmar.
In 1951, Shyam Sundar left for Japan amidst growing political uncertainty. There he began exporting goods across Asia and soon thereafter relocated to Hong Kong where he ventured into the watch trade. The entrepreneur in him however, wanted to breakout of the frustrating cycle of trade restrictions. Instead he decided to open a watch manufacturing business along with his family. The Hind Corporation grew into one of the largest watch manufacturers in Hong Kong, producing over 300,000 watches a month at its peak.
Today, Hind Group’s main division is run by two brothers. Surya Jhunjhnuwala runs the corporate office in Singapore, and Girish Jhunjhnuwala runs the corporate office in Hong Kong.
In 2002, Hind Group opened its first flagship property, a serviced apartment in the heart of Hong Kong's Central business district. This portfolio has now expanded to include an award-winning collection of all-inclusive boutique hotels across six locations in the SAR, as well as three properties in Australia. In 2014, the group opened its flagship property, Ovolo Southside in Hong Kong Island's Wong Chuk Hang district. Further Ovolo Hotel expansion plans are in process across Australia and other global markets.
Hind Group has also undertaken a number of property developments primarily in Singapore such as Residences at 338a, as well as the Domain in Brisbane, Australia. In 2007, the Group launched its first luxury hotel, Naumi in Singapore, garnering numerous accolades from the Singapore Government and making international "Hot Hotel" lists. Talks are already in the works to expand Naumi within cities in the region. The Singapore office additionally oversees the long-term and listed investments for the family.
The Group also runs a celebrated F&B business, Rang Mahal in Singapore. Rang Mahal was established in 2000 and run by Ritu Jhunjhnuwala.
